I Bought Cheap Polyacrylamide Instead of Kemira—It Shut Down Our Powder Coating Line

That Tuesday Phone Call

The call came at 9:17 on a Tuesday. Marco, our wastewater operator, said the polymer wasn't dispersing. My first thought: bad feed pump. Or maybe he grabbed the wrong bag from storage. It wasn't. By Friday, the epoxy resin powder coating line was down, a rush order of 1 coat industrial coatings was late, and I was staring at a mistake that cost us just over $7,400.

Why I Skimped on the Quote

In September 2022, our polymer stock for the wastewater system was running low. We had been using a Kemira polyacrylamide grade that matched our waste profile well. I sent our rep a request, and the quote from Kemira Chemicals Germany GmbH came back with line items: product, freight, packaging, and a certificate of analysis. Transparent, but not cheap.

Then a broker called. He said he had a polymer that was "exactly the same as Kemira" at 28% less. The email didn't include a technical datasheet or an SDS. When I asked for a breakdown of the costs, he said the quote was the price. End of story.

I was under budget pressure before year-end. The plant manager was asking why chemical costs kept creeping up. So I ignored my own rule and went with the cheaper quote.

The Batch That Didn't Work

The delivery showed up in bags with a generic logo I didn't recognize. The paperwork was thin—a packing slip and a one-page SDS that listed the polymer as "cationic type." That should have been the moment I stopped. We use an anionic high-molecular-weight polymer in our treatment process. Cationic polymer is a different product for a different problem.

But the bags were already in the chemical storage area, and we had a 5,000-liter tank of wastewater waiting to be treated. Marco added the product at the normal dose, and instead of nice, tight flocs, we got a milky cloud. He doubled the dose. Still nothing.

I remember standing next to the basin with a jar tester, watching the water stay cloudy. At 10 ppm, nothing. At 50 ppm, nothing. By that point I knew I'd made a dumb decision, but I was hoping the mistake would cost us time—not money. It cost both.

We lost two days trying to make it work. Our suspended-solids reading was above the discharge limit, so we couldn't send water to the municipal plant. That's the connection I'd missed: a cheap chemical didn't just waste money, it stopped production.

Here's what that "bargain" actually cost us:

  • Nine hours of downtime on the epoxy resin powder coating line: $1,600

Total: $7,400—not including the late delivery for a customer's 1 coat industrial coatings job or the credibility hit with my own team. The transparent Kemira quote had been around $2,650. I saved $750 on paper and spent $4,750 more than that to clean up the mess.

The worst part? The broker offered a 10% credit if I ordered again. No refund, no apology, no detailed invoice. That experience made me a believer in total-cost thinking.

What I Do Now Before Every Chemical Order

Since September 2022, I keep a pre-order checklist. It's not especially clever, but in the past 18 months it's caught 47 potential problems—wrong charge density, missing safety documents, freight fees that appeared only after the order, and one supplier who called the same product "Kemira equivalent" but couldn't show a certificate.

If I were starting over, I'd tell my younger self to ask these questions before buying any specialty chemical:

1. Compare the technical datasheet, not just the price

Molecular weight and ionic charge matter more than the brand name. Ask for the datasheet in writing, and compare it to the grade you currently use. If a supplier isn't sure about their own product's specs, walk away.

2. Verify the actual supply chain

If you're planning to buy Kemira polyacrylamide, make sure the seller actually has the right to sell it. Is it Kemira Chemicals Germany GmbH directly, or an authorized distributor? Ask for proof. I learned this the hard way: "same as Kemira" doesn't mean Kemira.

3. Ask what's NOT included

Freight, pallet fees, hazmat surcharges, minimum order charges, and customs paperwork can add 10–20% to a quote. The folks who show a low single number often plan to add fees later. Get every line item in writing.

4. Run a jar test, not a gamble

Before committing to a full truckload, test the chemical at the dose you'd actually use. It costs an afternoon and can save a week of headache. We do the same with a new epoxy resin powder coating before it goes on the line.

5. Keep the documents

SDS, Certificate of Analysis, batch number, and incoterms—keep them on file. If something goes wrong, you'll need them to trace the problem. If the supplier can't provide a CoA, that's a red flag.

The Bigger Picture: Ceramic and Epoxy Coatings Follow the Same Rule

People often ask me, "Does ceramic coating work?" The short answer from our test panels: yes, if the formulation is right for the substrate and the supplier is honest about its limitations. But I've seen coatings fail, including ceramic and epoxy powder, because somebody substituted a raw ingredient that looked similar on paper. Whether it's a ceramic topcoat or a polyacrylamide flocculant, the failure usually isn't in the chemistry—it's in the mismatch between the claimed spec and the delivered product.

That's why I don't buy chemicals based on a single number anymore. It's not about brand loyalty. It's about being able to verify the product, the supplier, and the total cost.

A cheap quote can be the most expensive thing you ever buy. I learned that lesson in 2022, and it cost me $7,400 and a very bad week. I've been making better purchasing decisions since, and the checklist above is the reason.

Before your next order, ask the uncomfortable questions. And if a deal seems too good to be true, run the water test before you run the line.
