Kemira Chemical Company: A Quality Inspector's Checklist for Specialty Chemical Suppliers

If you're evaluating a supplier like PT Kemira Chemicals Indonesia, you're not just buying a chemical. You're buying predictability: the same grade, the same quality, and the same regulatory paperwork, every time.

I work in quality at Kemira. I review roughly 200 incoming material lots a year, and I've spent most of my career on the supplier side and the buyer side. Well, more time on the buyer side, which is where you learn to ask the right questions.

Step 1. Define the chemistry, not just the trade name

The first question I ask isn't 'how much?' It's 'what exactly is in this?' A trade name can change when a supplier buys another brand. A product name can stay the same while the formulation shifts. That's why I ask for the SDS and CAS number before I look at pricing.

One question I get a lot is: 'What products contain propylene glycol?' The short answer is lots of things—paints, inks, polyester resins, deicing fluids, even personal care. Or rather, the list is long, but the concentration and grade matter more than the list. Only the SDS tells you what's actually inside. If a supplier can't produce an SDS within a day, that's a red flag.

Step 2. Test the sample in your process, not on paper

A spec sheet tells you what the supplier intends to sell. Your process tells you if that's true. I've seen raw materials pass a standard QC test and then fail in production because mixing time, temperature, or shear rate didn't match the supplier's assumption.

Example: powder coating. A blocked powder coating hopper is often caused by inconsistent particle size or poor flow, not by a gun problem. The material can look perfect in a sieve analysis and still bridge in the hopper because of moisture. So we run a trial batch on our own line, not just a lab test.

For niche applications like spent case coatings, the same principle applies with tighter tolerances. The coating has to survive heat, pressure, and mechanical stress. I don't accept a written 'pass' from the supplier. I want the coating sprayed onto actual cases, cured at the production cycle time, and checked for adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Step 3. Verify certificates and claims—including sustainability claims

A certificate of analysis (CoA) is not a guarantee. It's a snapshot of one batch, measured by the supplier's own method. Ask for the test method and the acceptance limits. Then ask for the country of origin, import paperwork, and any restrictions that affect your end market.

This is also where 'green' claims need extra attention. Per FTC Green Guides, environmental claims like 'recyclable' or 'biodegradable' must be substantiated. I don't accept a marketing paragraph as proof. I ask for the test report, the standard used, and the lab that ran it. If a supplier can't provide those, I assume the claim is a hope.

Step 4. Run a trial order, then a repeat order

One batch is a sample, not a trend. I've had a supplier pass the first trial and then fail on the second order because they substituted a cheaper feedstock. In Q1 2024, we received a batch where viscosity was off by 9% against our spec. Normal tolerance is 5%. The vendor said it was 'within industry standard.' Unless that standard allows a 9% gap, it isn't. We rejected the batch. The replacement order took three weeks and cost more than the original quote had saved.

This is why I never approve a supplier based on one lot. I ask for two production lots with a few weeks between them. If both pass, I add the supplier to the approved list. If not, they stay 'conditional.'

Step 5. Compare total cost, not sticker price

My experience is based on about 200 mid-sized industrial orders a year. In that sample, the lowest quote has cost us more in roughly 60% of cases—because of redo costs, delayed lines, or extra QC hours.

I'm not saying budget options are always bad. I'm saying they're riskier, and risk has a price. A $200 savings can turn into a $1,500 problem when a batch fails in storage.

Total cost includes the base price, freight, customs handling, sample and trial costs, incoming QC time, potential rework, and the risk of production downtime. If a supplier can't offer consistent quality, the 'savings' disappear quickly.

Things Most Buyers Ignore

1. Don't skip receiving inspection

It's tempting to trust a long-term supplier. I skipped a final review once because we were rushing and 'it's basically the same as last time.' It wasn't. That was a $400 mistake, and the supplier didn't even know it.

2. Check storage stability in your warehouse

A material can pass at the factory and fail in your warehouse after 30 days. Temperature, humidity, and shelf life all matter. Ask for storage stability data, not just typical properties.

3. Get the commitment in writing

Verbal agreements are fine until someone changes roles. I knew I should get written confirmation of a deadline, but thought 'we've worked together for years.' That was the one time the verbal agreement got forgotten. Now every purchase order includes the agreed spec, tolerance, and deadline.

The goal is not to find the cheapest supplier. It's to find the supplier that makes your process predictable. Whether you need water treatment polymers, additives for wood coatings, or raw materials for a powder coating line, consistency is the product. Technical reading notes
