I thought I had learned the substrate lesson. Then in September 2022, a customer asked if we could do powder coating on plastic for a new enclosure. I said yes because we had a powder coating line and plastic parts. I did not ask the crucial question: which plastic?
We tried a standard epoxy powder on a glass-filled nylon part. The cure oven was around 400°F. The parts came out with bumps, warped edges, and powder that flaked off with a fingernail. My first thought was that the powder was bad. The truth was that the substrate was wrong for that process. Plastic isn't conductive the way metal is, and standard powders cure too hot for many plastics. Since then, we've used low-cure powder, pre-treatment, and a separate oven for temperature-sensitive parts. It worked. But I do not want to pretend every plastic can be powder coated. Some can't. The line between them is not always obvious from a data sheet.
So, is powder coating wheels worth it?
That brings me to the question I get asked at more cookouts than I expected: is powder coating wheels worth it? My answer is 'it depends,' and I'll tell you how I know.
I paid $650 in 2023 to have my truck's aluminum wheels sandblasted and powder coated. The shop had to redo two wheels because of contamination. (Surprise, surprise.) In the end, they looked great and have held up through two winters of road salt. But would I recommend it for everyone? No. If you just want a color change and your wheels aren't worth much, a quality liquid paint job might be enough. If you plan to keep the vehicle for years and your wheels are good alloys, powder coating is worth it. If you have plastic wheel covers, don't try standard powder coating on plastic. The same substrate rule applies.
Honestly, I'm not sure why the first shop had so many contamination issues on those two wheels. My best guess is the pre-cleaning stage wasn't aggressive enough. I've never fully understood why some shops nail it every time and others struggle. I suspect it comes down to how much time they spend on preparation.
What I'd tell my younger self
If I could go back, I'd tell myself four things:
- Understand the substrate before you choose the chemistry.
- A product's name isn't enough. Check the actual process parameters and write them down.
- If someone says 'standard,' ask whose standard. Define it in writing.
- If a product claim sounds green, check the FTC Green Guides.
Kemira has been a reliable supplier for us, but no supplier can fix a substrate mismatch. The best Kemira chemical in the world won't help if you don't understand your process. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides, as of January 2025), environmental claims like 'recyclable' need to be substantiated. A product can only be advertised as recyclable if a substantial majority of consumers have recycling access for it. We stopped calling our powder coated parts 'recyclable' until we verified our customer's local recycling stream. That's not a chemistry lesson, but it saved us from a much worse kind of cleanup.
Technical reading notes
When applying this update to a water treatment program, review site water analysis, metallurgy, target discharge limits, current SDS revision, and the internal approval route used by EHS and procurement. A single product name rarely carries enough context for a confident substitution decision.
