Powder Coating in Colorado: A Buyer’s Perspective on What Actually Matters

There’s No One Right Answer—It Depends on Your Setup

If you’re Googling “powder coating colorado” or “powder coating wheels vs painting,” you’ve probably already figured out that there’s a ton of conflicting advice out there. Some people swear powder coating is the only way to go. Others say good old-fashioned liquid paint is fine, especially if you’re on a budget.

I manage purchasing for a 40-person company in Colorado Springs—we do custom fabrication and some light industrial coating. I’m not a chemist or a materials engineer. But I’ve processed about 200 orders for coating services over the past 5 years, and I’ve learned the hard way that the answer depends entirely on what you’re coating, how it’ll be used, and who your customer is.

Scenario B: High-Volume Production (You Need Consistency, Not Perfection)

Honestly, I’d consider liquid coating if throughput is priority.

I know this contradicts the “powder is always better” crowd. But here’s the thing: powder coating lines are slow. You’re looking at 15-20 minutes per batch in the oven, plus cool-down time. If you’re running 500+ parts a day, that’s a bottleneck.

Everything I’d read said powder coating was faster because there’s no drying time. In practice, for a 2024 production run of 300 small brackets, the liquid line finished in 3 days. The powder quote said 5 days—because of the cure cycle and the fact that they had to hang each part individually.

If you’re in this boat, here’s what matters:

  • Ask for a cycle time estimate per part, not per batch. That’s where the real cost is.
  • Make sure the liquid paint is a two-part urethane or epoxy. Cheap single-stage paints won’t hold up. We paid for that lesson: saved $150 on the job, spent $400 on re-coating when the first batch failed salt spray testing.
