What Is Black Oxide Coating?

If you work in industrial procurement, someone will eventually send you a drawing with a note that says black oxide. The first time I saw that note, I assumed it meant black paint. It does not. Black oxide is a conversion coating that changes the surface of ferrous metal into magnetite (Fe3O4). It adds very little thickness, typically 0.00002 to 0.00004 inches, and it provides mild corrosion resistance when sealed with oil, wax, or a lacquer. It is not a finish you use for heavy outdoor exposure. It is a finish you use when you need black coloring, minimal dimensional change, and a clear pass on salt spray for short periods.

There is more than one way to blacken a part. Hot black oxide runs at around 285°F, mid-temperature processes run a bit lower, and cold blackening happens at room temperature. They are not the same. In my opinion, the question what is black oxide coating matters less than the follow-up: what is the part going to be used for? That answer drives every procurement decision.

When to Use This Checklist

This checklist is for buyers, not process engineers. If you are approving a coating PO, sourcing a specialty chemical, or trying to compare two very different finishes like black oxide and red powder coating, this will help. It will not tell you which chemistry to choose, but it will keep you from approving the wrong one.

I manage the coating and specialty chemicals budget for a mid-size metal parts manufacturer. Over the past 6 years, I have built a six-step checklist. It starts with the spec and ends with the supplier. The point is prevention, not correction. A 15-minute spec review is cheaper than a batch rejection.

The Six-Step Procurement Checklist

  1. Define the coating in writing. Do not accept a verbal it is black oxide. Ask for the process spec, the class, and the finish type. For military-style black oxide, the spec is often MIL-DTL-13924. If I remember right, that spec replaced the older QQ-P-35. If the vendor cannot name the spec, that is a red flag. A coating shop that knows its process can put it on paper in five minutes.
  2. Confirm the substrate and pre-treatment. Black oxide is generally for ferrous metals. If the part is aluminum or galvanized steel, this is the wrong process. Pre-treatment is the part people skip. The part has to be clean, free of oils, rust, and scale. I have seen a line stop because someone assumed the machining coolant would come off in a regular wash. It did not. To me, substrate confirmation is a deal-breaker step. If the surface is not prepared, the black oxide will not form properly, and the part will fail the salt spray test.
  3. Separate black oxide from red powder coating. Red powder coating is a different animal. Powder coating is a pigmented thermoplastic or thermoset coating applied electrostatically and then cured. It builds much thicker film, usually 2 to 4 mils, and it can handle tougher wear and corrosion. Black oxide is a conversion layer. If a drawing says black oxide and a supplier offers red powder coating as a more durable substitute, that is not a straight substitution. The dimensional change alone can break your tolerances. I went back and forth on one project between black oxide and red powder coating. Black oxide won because the part had tight tolerances and the film build would have killed the fit.
  4. Model the total cost, not the unit price. The cheapest quote is not the cheapest order. When I compared quotes for what should have been a $4,200 annual coating contract, the low bid came in 18% below the incumbent. Then I added line-item fees: masking, racking, extra handling, minimum batch, and freight. The low bid ended up 9% higher. Actually, 11% higher after the first rush order. The lesson: build a total cost spreadsheet before you compare quotes. Include rework cost, because the cheapest supplier is often the one who will make you inspect every part.
  5. Require a spec, an SDS, and a certificate of analysis. For any chemical process, I want the current SDS and the applicable test report. For black oxide, ask about salt spray hours per ASTM B117 and the oil or sealer used. For powder, ask for thickness, impact, and adhesion data. If you are sourcing a specialty chemical like ISU Specialty Chemical Li2S, the same idea applies: purity, packaging, and handling requirements matter as much as the formula. I want to say the SDS should be in the 16-section GHS format as of March 2025 under OSHA HazCom, but I would check the exact revision before I told a supplier that from memory.
  6. Verify the supplier's role and location. A chemical supplier is not always the coating applicator. It is great for parts that need impact resistance, color retention, and outdoor durability. But it changes the part dimensions. Black oxide is essentially a thin layer that follows the part geometry. Red powder coating is a thick layer that can hide a thread, fill a hole, or prevent a bearing from seating.

There is also a common mix-up between red powder coating and red oxide primer. They are not the same. Red oxide primer is a liquid primer, and red powder coating is a cured powder finish. If you are buying by color alone, you are missing the technical requirement.

Common Mistakes That Still Cost Me Money

I have more scars than I would like. Here are the ones I check for now.

  • Assuming black oxide is a paint and skipping the sealer. Black oxide without oil or wax will rust quickly.
  • Using red powder coating as a color match. The color is not the process. If your drawing says black oxide, a red powder coating has no business on the part.
  • Trusting a verbal we do that without a written process spec. The word that is too flexible.
  • Forgetting that rush charges and rework are part of the total cost. When I audited our 2023 coating spend, I found that the biggest cost driver was not the per-pound price. It was the number of orders that had to be re-done.
  • Assuming the chemical supplier on the SDS is the company with the coating line. That mistake creates a gap in quality responsibility.

Bottom line: a 15-minute checklist is cheaper than a 15-day rework. This approach worked for us, but I can only speak to U.S. suppliers and a mid-size operation with predictable order patterns. If you are buying coatings for a job shop with irregular demand, your checklist may need extra steps.

If you ask me, the question what is black oxide coating is the easy part. The harder part is checking the details around it. That checklist is the cheapest insurance I have found. So I would argue it is a no-brainer to use one.

Technical reading notes

When applying this update to a water treatment program, review site water analysis, metallurgy, target discharge limits, current SDS revision, and the internal approval route used by EHS and procurement. A single product name rarely carries enough context for a confident substitution decision.
